Track a probate application

Wondering how to track a probate application in the UK? It might feel tricky when you’re dealing with a loved one’s estate, but there are simple ways to stay informed. This guide covers online tracking, phone updates, and how long it might take.

How to track it online

If you applied for probate using the MyHMCTS online service, you can track your progress in a few clicks:

  • Log in to your MyHMCTS account.
  • View your case under the “Probate” section.
  • Check the status updates, such as:
    • “Awaiting documentation”;
    • “Examining”;
    • “Ready to issue”;
    • “Grant issued”.

If you submitted a paper application, you can still track it by logging in and adding the probate details to your MyHMCTS account.

Track by phone, text, or email

Prefer speaking to someone? You can get updates by:

  • Calling HMCTS at 0300 303 0648, Monday to Friday, 9:00am –1:00pm;

  • Texting FORM to 60777 to request a callback;

  • Emailing support@wearegroup.com.

If you used a Solicitor or probate specialist, they can also check the status for you.

Typical timeline

The average wait for the Grant of Probate is up to 16 weeks from submission, but complex cases may take longer.

Some tips to stay on track:

  • Check your online account or call if it’s been over 12 weeks.
  • Look for emails or letters from HMCTS or HMRC - don’t forget your junk folder!

Why tracking matters

Knowing the application’s status gives you peace of mind. It helps you:

  • Spot issues early (e.g., “Stopped” status);
  • Prepare for next steps, like paying debts or selling property;
  • Make informed decisions without delays.

When is probate granted?

Once the status reads “Grant issued, the legal document is ready. You can download a copy online or order certificate copies for banks and organisations. Then you can begin dealing with the estate, such as accessing accounts or distributing assets.

Quick checklist for tracking

  • Applied online or by post;
  • Signed into MyHMCTS (even for paper cases);
  • Noted your reference number;
  • Set reminders to check after 12 weeks;
  • Have HMCTS or Solicitor contact details at hand.
You can track a probate application in the UK, either online or by phone. Just keep your reference number handy and use MyHMCTS for fast updates. If it’s taking a while, a polite call after 12 weeks can help. Staying informed reduces stress and helps you handle the estate confidently.
